Abstract

The effect of schistosomiasis on human health is high especially in resource poor countries like Ethiopia. Intestinal schistosomiasis is the major causes of morbidity in most parts of the country. School age children are the vulnerable segments of the population. Lack of sanitation, potable water, environmental modification, health education, mass treatment, awareness and manageable water harvesting programs like irrigation are the contributing factors for schistosomiasis. Proper health impact assessment for new irrigation schemes and other water resources projects will provide a solid basis for the incorporation of health safeguards at design and construction plans in Ethiopia.

An evaluation of infection with intestinal helminths among pupils in rural communities in Gwagwada district, Nigeria

Abstract

A comparative study on infection with intestinal helminths among pupils in rural and sub-urban primary schools was carried out in Gwagwada district, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Nigeria. Faecal samples were collected from 244 pupils in eight rural and sub-urban public schools and examined for eggs of intestinal helminths using the filtration technique and microscopically examined for intestinal parasites. The overall prevalence in both rural and sub-urban pupils was 67.2%, with the sub-urban pupils having a prevalence of 70.8% and the rural pupils a 58.9% prevalence. The five intestinal helminths observed in the study were Ascaris lumbricoides (37.0 and 29.8%), Trichuris trichiura (4.1 and 4.7%), hookworms (9.6 and 5.3%), Taenia species (32.9 and 11.1%) and Schistosoma mansoni (21.9 and 1.8%) in rural and sub-urban pupils, respectively. There was no significant association of the prevalence with location. Mass deworming campaign should be embarked upon immediately and sanitation facilities should be provided to curtail these alarming infections.

A study of malaria vectors resistance to several insecticides and the need for the development of alternative insecticides for use in vector control programs

Abstract

Malaria vectors have acquired widespread resistance to several insecticides; thus, there is a critical need for the development of alternative insecticides for use in vector control programs. The mosquito toxicity of a novel insecticide/repellent consisting of medium-chain carbon fatty acids (C8910) was examined. Determination of LCD50 and LCD90 was made against six colony-reared Anopheles species using probit analysis on mortality data generated by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention bottle bioassays. Eight different concentrations of C8910+silicone oil provided an LCD50 ranging from 55.4 (44.2 to 65.9) in Anopheles minimus to 132.6 (92.8 to 301.3) in Anopheles dirus. Similarly, LCD90 varied from 138.5 (107.9 to 207.9) to 1228.8 (449.8 to 21400), respectively. Further development of C8910 and similar compounds could provide vector control specialists novel, environmentally-safe insecticides for controlling insect disease vectors.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of studies reporting Taeniasis/ cysticercosis in Côte d’Ivoire for implementation of control or elimination strategies. A systematic review of the literature was conducted to gather valid information on Taeniasis/cysticercosis in Cote d’Ivoire using search engines: PubMed, British Library, ScienceDirect, African Journals Online and GoogleScholar using the search terms: Taeniasolium, cysticercosis, Taeniasis, neurocysticercosis, neglected tropical diseases,helminths, control, efficiencyetc. Thesis, master, reports activities of universities and research institutes and veterinary services have been reviewed too. Pharmacy (12) and medicine (4) thesis work and the annual reports of the Department of Parasitology Mycology at the Institute Pasteur of Côte d'Ivoire (1990-2010) reported varying prevalence of Taeniasp from 0.3% to 11.1%, with higher rates at Toumodi (11.1%), Divo and Lakota (5.4%) and Abidjan (2.5%). Four publications reported cases of human cysticercosis, the most recent dated from 1999, with two cases of neurocysticercosis determined by CT scan. Two veterinary thesis conducted in 1978 and one in 1991 show a prevalence of porcine cysticercosis at 2.5%, with higher prevalence at Korhogo (3.9%) and Bouaké (5, 7%). Existing data is old and not identify risk areas. Further research remains important to improve tools.

An investigation on the risk factors predisposing children to ascariasis transmission in a peri-urban community of Osun state, Nigeria

Abstract

The risk factors predisposing children to ascariasis transmission in a peri-urban community of Osun state, Nigeria were investigated from November, 2012 to June, 2013. Preschool children aged 24 to 60 months were tested by faecal examination for Ascaris lumbricoides infection using Kato thick smears after information on personal biodata, access to water supply, sanitation, socio-economic status of their parents, hygiene and deworming history was collected using a questionnaire. Out of 416 children examined, 117(28.1%) were infected with an overall mean intensity of 1846.33±235.23 eggs per gram (epg). Infection patterns were gender comparable and age dependent with peak prevalence (33.1%) and mean intensity (2264.14±493.58 epg) occurring in children aged 48 to 59 months. Parental educational background, sanitation, washing hands with soap and water and deworming history were identified as the significant risk factors which correlated with Ascaris infection. These findings suggest that socio-economic risk factors which play a role in disease transmission need to be taken into account when formulating sustainable control strategies for ascariasis and other soil-transmitted helminths in Nigeria.

A study of the prophylaxis of different single and combined crude antigens used as candidate vaccines in an experimental model of Schistosoma mansoni infection

Abstract

This study aims to assess the prophylaxis of different single and combined crude antigens used as candidate vaccines in an experimental model of Schistosoma mansoni infection. Cercarial antigen preparation (CAP), soluble worm antigen preparation (SWAP), soluble egg antigen (SEA) and combined antigens (CAP + SWAP + SEA) against schistosomiasis combined with either Freund’s adjuvant or with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) were tested for vaccine efficacy in Albino mice by detecting their effects on worm burden and tissue egg count (liver and intestine). The data obtained showed that, the combined antigens was the most protective with significant reduction in the worm burden (90.28%), and tissue egg load (liver and intestine: 93.67 and 93.98%), respectively. Thus, combining these different antigens (CAP, SWAP and SEA) provides augmentation of the protective immunity compared to each component administered individually. The combination therefore stands out as a potential candidate worth considering in the development of a feasible vaccine against schistosomiasis.
