Abstract

This study addresses the extent to which music is capable of modifying the consumer's perception of the endorser and the brand. A sample of 540 subjects was exposed on random to one of four versions of an experimental radio commercial for a fictitious brand of mineral water differing only in the selection of the background music. The results indicate that music in advertising can significantly influence the perception of the brand endorser, and that the impressions of the brand could be manipulated by means of specific music pieces. The findings of the study also emphasize the effect of music in advertising on emotional reactions and memories evoked. Implications for advertising practitioners are discussed.

Key words: Music in advertising, memory, emotional reactions, brand perception, endorser impression, brand conditioning, brand attitude.

Multiple intelligences and the success of expatriation: The roles of contingency variables

Accepted 21 August 2017

Abstract

Although, prior studies have discussed how the various intelligences of expatriates (IQ – intellectual intelligence, CQ – cultural intelligence, and EQ – emotional intelligence) could contribute to their success on foreign assignments, they tend to discuss each of these separately. By asserting that all of these intelligences operate within expatriates simultaneously, this study then examines how they contribute to the success of expatriation. Moreover, this work also investigates under what conditions multiple intelligences can magnify their effects. By adopting a qualitative study approach including, in-depth interviews of experts, employers and expatriates, this study reveals that the use of multiple intelligences is contingent upon expatriates’ commitment toward the organization, social support, functional interaction, and assignment tenure.

Key words: Cognitive intelligence, emotional intelligence, cultural intelligence, social supports, commitment, functional interaction, assignment tenure.

Abstract

Using the data set from January 2, 2004 to April 28, 2006, this study examined all aspects of the relation between volatility in the cash index and volatility in the nearby-month and nearby-quarter index futures. The GARCH Model was first estimated to examine the impact of the futures volume growth on the conditional variance of the cash price and vice versa. Next, the conditional variances at the 10-day interval were calculated to derive the variance series for performing Granger-Causality Tests. Evidence from the GARCH (1,1) estimation indicated that the cash volume growth lost the power in explaining its own price volatility when the futures volume growth was included in the conditional variance equation of the cash index return, the cash volume growth had no influences on volatility in the futures markets, and the trading volume growth of nearby-month index futures was most influential in explaining volatility in the three markets. The Granger Causality Test was performed for the co-integrated variance series in the context of the error correction model. Evidence indicated that there were one-way volatility spillovers from the index futures to the cash index and there were two-way volatility spillovers between the nearby-month and nearby-quarter index futures markets.

Key words: TSE stock index, TAIFEX stock index futures, GARCH, ECM, Granger causality, volatility.

Accepted 22 September, 2017

Abstract

This paper investigates the factors affecting customer value and behavioral intentions using automobile buying behavior. Factors affecting specific aspects of consumer behavior are also explored. Building on the literature, a conceptual model is developed. The authors introduce a comprehensive customer value framework and test an extended value model with products. Based on a theoretical conceptualization of the constructs and an empirical pre test, 268 car (206 and Pride) drivers, were surveyed and the variables measured. In this research, students at Azad University, who were drivers and not purchasers of automobiles (206 and Pride), are the study population; 268 students were chosen as the statistical sample. The findings suggest that the traditional customer value process is useful for automobile research and marketing. In addition, brand awareness and price fairness concepts were found to play significant roles in the customer value process. This paper presents a novel way for them to market their brands, focusing on how consumers associate themselves with these brands.

Key words: Brand, customer value, behavioral intentions.

Abstract

People’s participation is considered as an integral part of both the ideal as well as the practice of democracy, and reflects the basic aspirations of the people. Citizen Community Board (CCB) is a community based organization that was introduced in Pakistan in 2001, under which people identify and implement their own need base projects by registering their own CCBs upon approval of funds from local government. With the intervention of Devolution Trust of Community Empowerment (DTCE), the number of registered CCBs not only increased, but also the projects implemented by CCBs are more than that of the local government. The paper investigates the improvement in CCB’s registration with the intervention of DTCE in Abbottabad District from December, 2003 and also the contribution of CCBs in the developmental activities with respect to the local government. Results show that CCBs are playing a more effective role in citizen empowerment than that of the local government and thus, show a sustainable way to improve the capacity of the local community.

Key words: Community empowerment, decentralization, empowerment, participation.
