Examining the Influence of Agricultural Technology Adoption on Wheat Yields Among Smallholder Farmers: Evidence from Southern Tigrai, Ethiopia

Abstract
Ethiopian agriculture the back bone of the economy yet is characterized by small scale farming and experienced erratic rainfall as well as drought. The low produce can possibly grow through developing technology adoption and improved practices on the marginal farm lands. This study, therefore, examines the impact of wheat row planting technology adoption on small farms yield in Ofla Woreda, Southern zone of Tigrai, and Ethiopia using a primary data sources from a survey of a random sample of 300 small scale farm household heads. Of which 99 household heads were wheat row planting adopters (users) and the remaining 201were wheat grower households sow in broadcasting method non adopters (non users).To deal with this, propensity score matching (PSM) econometric tool was implemented. Next, the average treatment effects on the treated (ATT) estimated result was obtained using PSM method and has proven that wheat row planting technology adopter small farm household heads was gotten with a range of 40 to 60 quintal of wheat yield per hectare at a cost of sowing 4,800 ETB larger in a single production year unlike to the matched control group which is below 20 quintal at a Birr 3,600 cost of sowing. At the end, the researcher has recommended that scaling up of wheat row planting technology adoption as a package to increase wheat crop output on the marginal land and fasten the anti-poverty policy struggle is indispensable in Southern Tigrai, Ethiopia.

Comparative analysis of different tomato varieties in Borana Zone, Yabello District, Southern Ethiopia

Abstract
Tomato is one of the most important vegetable in Ethiopia as well as in the world in irrigated regions. It can be produced in a wide range of climatic conditions and many types of soils. Borana zone has potential to produce the crop, but not well done due to technical (production technology) and socio-economic problems. Among technical problem unavailability of seeds of adapted and improved tomato varieties is the most limiting factor. Therefore, the objective of this research is to test a range of improved varieties under Borana condition to identify genotypes with relatively better performance. To this effect, four improved and recommended varieties of tomato, namely: Fetan, Melkashola, Miya and Cochoro introduced from Melkassa Agricultural Research Center and one variety called CAL-J introduced from Kenya were tried for their adaptation at Yabello under irrigation using tap water in the year 2014. The experiment was single factor (varieties) single season experiment in RCBD with three replications. Parameters like Plant height, number of primary branch, days to 50% flowering, days to first harvest, Total fruit yield (ton/ha), marketable fruit yield (ton/ha), unmarketable fruit yield (ton/ha), fruits number per plant and single fruit weight (gram) were collected and analyzed. The result showed that there was significant (P ≤ 0.05) variation among the varieties for parameters including Plant height, number of primary branch, Total fruit yield (ton/ha), marketable fruit yield (ton/ha), unmarketable fruit yield (ton/ha) and single fruit weight (gram), but there was no significant variation for parameters days to 50% flowering, days to first harvest and fruit number per plant. Variety Miya gave significantly higher marketable fruit yield (22.95 ton/ha) and higher average of single fruit weight (85.84 gram) than other varieties. The least fruit marketable yield was obtained from the variety Fetan (11.61 ton/ha). Based on the result of the experiment, Variety Miya was recommended for further popularization in Yabello district under irrigation.

Enhancing water efficiency and weed management in baby corn cultivation through plastic mulching

Abstract
Field experiments were conducted during the winter season of 2003 -04 and 2004 -05 to determine the effect of mulch in relation to irrigation and planting method on soil temperature, weed control, baby corn growth, water use and yield. The study revealed that bed planting of baby corn caused 34.9% increase in yield over ridge planting method. Plastic mulch increased baby corn yield by 18.9% and 77.5% over rice straw and unmulched treatment respectively. Baby corn yield at irrigation level of 1.2 ETc proved significantly superior to 1.0 ETc and 0.8 ETc levels. The study further revealed that plastic mulch at irrigation level of 0.8 ETc resulted significant increase in yield by 28.6% over unmulched soil condition even when it was irrigated at 1.2 ETc and resulted 30.6% of water saving. It was interesting that in bed planting method, plastic mulch caused statistically same baby corn yield at all the levels of irrigation with maximum water use efficiency of 40.1 kg/ha-cm at irrigation level of 0.8 ETc, while in ridge planting method the baby corn yield was statically same only at irrigation level of 1.2 ETc and 1.0 ETc, while at 0.8 ETc it decreased significantly.

Role of Micro irrigation in producing more with less

Abstract
The paper briefly reviews the growth and spread of micro irrigation (MI) in India. The analysis uses the data available in public domain and those collected from the government sources. The components of the irrigation system and the assistance given by the government in extending the technology are mentioned. The role of industry in the extension and adoption of MI is also discussed. The paper also explains the role of micro irrigation in the extension of Precision Farming (PF) and how it impacted on several crops. The field data for the latter study were collected from farmers of many states in India with whom the author worked.

Agronomic performance, production components and agricultural productivity of maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars

Abstract
The rain fed crop is highly dependent on environmental conditions, and study aims to evaluate the agronomic performance, yield components and agricultural productivity of six maize cultivars in the region of the coastal tablelands of Alagoas State, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized complete block, with five replications and six treatments. Six maize cultivars, three varieties (Jaboatão, Batité and AL Bandeirante) and three hybrids (AG 7098, AG 7088 and AG 8677) were evaluated from June 8 to October 14, 2015. The experimental area of 2000 m2 (0.2 ha) was divided into six cultivation rows of seven meters linear portions; spaced 0.8 m between rows and 0.25 m between plants, totaling 50.000 plants ha-1. During the experiment, the following were evaluated: plant height, leaf area index (LAI), culm diameter and at the end of the experiment, the production components, agricultural productivity, water balance and the grains water content were determined. The highest grain yield was obtained by hybrid AG 8677 (4.2 t ha-1) followed by the AG 7098 (3.6 t ha-1), with an average of 3.0 t ha-1 for all cultivars. Variety AL Bandeirante achieved a productivity similar to that of hybrid AG 7088. The lowest productivities were verified by varieties Jaboatão (2.0 t ha-1) and Batité (2.2 t ha-1). However, these yields were statistically similar to that of variety AL Bandeirante. The maximum water excess during cultivation of maize was 504 mm. An increased productivity was shown by hybrid AG 8677, and the smallest of the range was the variety Jaboatão. The average productivity of the hybrids was 50% higher than that of the varieties.
