Growth and yield performance of some improved soybean varieties as influenced by intercropping with maize and cassava in two contrasting locations in Southwest Nigeria

Abstract
Four improved varieties of soybean (TGX 1448-2E, TGX 1445-2E, TGX 1485-1D and TGX 1019-2E) were evaluated for growth and yield performance under intercropping system with maize and cassava at Ibadan and Oniyo in 2001 and 2002. Plant height at harvest, number of pods per plant, weight of 100 seeds and seed yield were used to assess the performance of improved varieties of soybean while grain yield and fresh tuber yield were considered for maize and cassava under the intercropped. Combined analysis of variance of growth and yield parameters showed variations among improved varieties of soybean, maize and cassava for intercropping, location, year and their interactions. Soybean variety TGX 1485-1D with highest number of pods per plant, weight of 100 seeds and seed yield was the most desirable variety for intercropping with maize and cassava across the two locations. Maize grain yield and cassava fresh tuber yield were similar among the four improved varieties of soybean in their response under the intercropped across the two locations. Higher seed yields of soybean varieties were obtained from Oniyo (derived savanna agro ecology) compared to Ibadan (rain forest agro ecology) probably due to differences in climatic conditions. The study has indicated that TGX 1485-1D, which was highest yielding across the different locations, will fit well into the farming systems of small-scale farmers of Southwest Nigeria.

Effect of Taungya on regeneration of endemic forest tree species in Nigeria: Edo State Nigeria as a case study

Abstract
Taungya as an agroforestry system in regenerating endemic forest tree species is not successful in Edo State. This was revealed in the current study. Significant differences in natural regeneration exist in the zones studied. The failure of the Taungya system arose from abandonment of the sites after devegetation, non availability of planting stock which is due to poor funding. The area that was kept under continuous cultivation had 15.60 of regenerated endemic species. The area that fallow for 3 years had 34.33 species regenerated. The control had 22.33 of regenerated species. The most occurred species is Terminlia Superba - 31. Evidence from the study is indicative of the fact that adequate endemic taxa regeneration can not rely on Taungya system as it is practiced now. To ensure safe environment, endemic forest species saved from extinction, proper regeneration and forest plantation establishment of endemic toxa are recommended.

Optimization of DNA extraction for ISSR studies in Tectona grandis L.f. - an important forest tree species.

Abstract
Four extraction methods and sample types were evaluated for yield, quality and suitability of genomic DNA for ISSR marker amplification in teak (Tectona grandis). Both CTAB and SDS based extraction procedures extracted better quantity and purity index of genomic DNA. Leaves of trees, bud grafts and seedlings yielded better DNA than seeds. Using identical PCR conditions, DNA extraction methods and sample types influenced amplifications of ISSR markers, with no amplifications among seed samples. DNA extraction method and sample type are very important consideration for reproducible ISSR-based molecular marker analysis in teak.

Features of Homestead Agroforestry in Coastal Region of Bangladesh: Case of Selected Villages of Patuakhali District

Abstract
The study was conducted in purposively selected two villages of each upazila namely Dumkiand Bauphalof Patuakhali district in Bangladesh. The study was taken to observe the number of existing plant species in homestead and to explore their relationships with the selected characteristics of the respondents. Eighty respondents were selected randomly using multistage random sampling procedure. A structured personal interview schedule was used to determine some parameters. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation (r) was used for statistical analysis along with the usual descriptive statistical parameters. A total of 69 species in where categorically 12 timber species, 20 fruit species, 10 medicinal species, 8 ornamental plant species and 19 vegetable species were recorded. The overwhelming majority of (52.50%) respondents grew 11 to 14 plant species in their homestead areas. Among the selected characteristics of the respondents, education, family size, constraints, perception and support service showed no significant relationship with their diversified plant species. Farm size and knowledge showed a significant relationship with their number of plant species grows where farm size showed a negative relation. Plant growing habit in the homestead is highly related with knowledge which can enhance the vegetation coverage at homestead areas of coastal Bangladesh.

The influence of host tree morphology and stem size on epiphyte biomass distribution in Lusenga Plains National Park, Zambia

Abstract
The influence of host tree morphology and stem size on epiphyte biomass distribution in host trees was assessed in Lusenga Plains National Park, Zambia for the period 2004 to 2007. A total of 8 ha were sampled in bush land, woodland and riparian forest vegetation communities. Epiphytes were collected, dried and weighed to obtain biomass, which was apportioned between different host tree species, vertical and horizontal branches, crown and trunk, and small, medium, and large stems, as well as smooth and rough bole textured substrates. Horizontal branches had more epiphytes, 50% than vertical branches (17%). Tree canopies had more epiphyte biomass, 68% than trunks (32%). In riparian forests Usnea articulata and Ramalina reticulata were not selective. In Miombo woodlands, epiphytes and certain tree species with larger stems and rough bore texture were selected. Larger substrates dbh > 100 cm had higher epiphyte biomass (94.46%) followed by medium dbh 51 to 100 cm (5.29%) and the least was on small girth dbh ≥ 20 to 50 cm (0.25%). Rough substrates had 89% biomass and only 11% occurred on smooth bole substrates. It was concluded that tree crowns, horizontal stems and branches, large and rough bole textured tree substrates provided suitable habitat for epiphyte seed settling, germination and moisture retention, while exposure to sunlight supported germination and growth of epiphytes. Maintenance of mature Miombo woodlands was therefore found to be critical in maintaining epiphytes, while protection of preferred tree species would ensure their long-term survival and sustenance of hydrologic functions.

Species diversity and abundance of wild birds in Dagona-Waterfowl Sanctuary Borno State, Nigeria

Abstract
The study of bird species diversity and richness in Dagona-Waterfowl sanctuary was carried out in early wet and late dry seasons. This was to provide some information on the wild birds of the sanctuary. Dagona sanctuary is located within the Bade-Nguru wetland sector; it is one of the important bird areas strategized for the conservation of avifauna species in Sub-Sahara region, Nigeria. Line transect method was used to carry out birds’ survey at three different lake sites, namely: Gatsu (Site:1), Mariam (Site: 2) and Oxbow (Site: 3). The data were analyzed with the Kolmogorov- Smirnov test to determine the distribution level of the birds. The birds’ diversity was assessed using Shannon-Weiner diversity index. The results showed that bird species diversity was not equally distributed in the sites Site 2 had the highest diversity with an index of 2.74 compared to Site 1 with 1.84 and Site 3 with 1.62. Likewise, bird species diversity in the area was normally distributed birds’ abundance were significantly different (P<0.05) among the three sites. Site 1 had the highest number of bird (16.36) compared to Site 2 (14.32) and site 3 (11.51). It was observed that there was a significant relationship between vegetation density and bird species diversity; because as tree density increases, diversity of bird species decreases. Therefore, there is a significant relationship between vegetation density and bird species diversity. Total number of 135 bird species in 40 families was recorded during the survey. Seventy-four percent were found in site1, sixty-three percent in Site 2 and seventy-one percent in site 3. The birds that were observed during this study were made up of resident (Ardeidae family), migratory (Accipitridae family) and palearctic species (yellow wagtail, warblers, northern shoveler and sandpipers). It can be concluded that wild birds are good indicators of the ecosystem, revealing the state of the wetland. Some sites were more disturbed, as observed in site: 1 and site: 3. It was however recommended that regular monitoring of the sites should be carried out so as to control changes in the state of wetland ecosystem.
