A study of Lactobacillus sp. with Moringa oleifera leaves extract for food supplement

Abstract
A study was carried out to find out the best combination treatment between Moringa oleifera leaf concentration and filler to produce encapsulated Lactobacillus food supplement. Inoculation of Lactobacillus on to media containing different types of amino acid and mannitol to promote the growth of organism showed a promising result. The use of proline (0.45% w/v), lysine (0.30% w/v) and mannitol (0.75% w/v) reduced the lag phase from 12 hours to 8 hours and reached the stationer phase after 13 hours of incubation. Encapsulation of Lactobacillus with liquid medium containing 8% Moringa oleifera leaf and 15% maltodextrin then dried with spray dryer producing a promising product containing protein 27.37%; vitamin A 159.60 mg/g vitamin C 50.95 mg/100g; calcium 773.45 mg/100g. On allowing standing the encapsulated organism in nutrient broth at 300C showed that the viable cell count only reduced by 5% and the growth rate was similar with that of fresh culture.

Abstract
In this study we provide results from a study of nine treatments with four replicates tested under field conditions consisting of 36 piles of 2 meters long and 1.5m wide and 1.0m high. Three piles were left at 25cm below the surface, three at 50cm below the surface and the other three on the surface with 0%, 25% and 50% moisture respectively, at three replications. Temperatures and samples for identification of parasites, were collected from two different scanning depths (0-7.5 and 7.5-15 cm). In the manure piles and non-solarized (control), samples were collected according to NOM-044-SEMARNAT-2002. Solarized for manure sampling was at the end of the period of solarization to determine Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia. For the manure non solarized (control), there was a homogeneous mixture of the various stables in North area of the Ejido Fresno. The experimental results indicate that achieving an increase in temperatures in solarized piles. The pile with 50% moisture with an average measure of 56.41, under these temperatures was eliminated Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia. In the sample of manure without solarization was detected the presence of Escherichia coli, F.enterobacteriaceae, Enterobacter sp., Bacille sp., Mucor sp. and F.Sanccharonmycetaceae, Cryptosporidium sp. and Giardia sp.

Technical and economic efficiency of resource use in wetland rice cultivation

Abstract
The study was undertaken to estimate the resource use efficiency of wetland rice cultivation in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya during the cropping season of 2010-11. Data for the study was collected from 120 wetland rice farmers through simple random sampling procedure with at least 20 farmers from each CD Block covering 20 villages including at least six farmers from each village. The Cobb-Douglas production function (monetary value) was used to measure the resource use efficiency of wetland rice farmers. Findings revealed that the wetland rice farmers were technically inefficient in the use of farm resources. The implication of the study was that technical efficiency in wetland rice production in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya could be increased through better use of land, fertilizer and improved seeds. However, the values of the MPP showed that the farmers were technically more efficient in the use of land than all the resources for higher productivity of wetland rice. This implies that land, fertilizer, FYM/vermicompost and irrigation were under-utilized (>1) while all other inputs were over- utilized (<1). The adjustment in the MVPs for optimal resource use (% divergence) indicated that for optimal allocation of resources required about 33.87, 84.81, 83.18, 141.35, 166.23, 357.03, 190.52, 27.74, 135.32, 118.91 % increase in land, fertilizers, FYM/vermicompost, weedicides, pesticides, fencing, power tiller, irrigation, machinery/implements and marketing, respectively while seeds, human labour and bullock labour were over utilized which required 52.21, 89.11, 27.18 % reduction for optimal use in wetland rice production.

Impact of textile dyeing effluents on germination and seedling stage of country bean (Lablab niger var. typicus)

Abstract
An experiment was conducted on the impact of dying effluents on germination and seedling stage for the production of country bean (Lablab niger var. typicus). Seven stages of Dyeing effluents were used as treatment variables and compare their effect on germination attributes and early growth stage of country bean. The treatment of neutralization stage ( D5) to enhanced the germination percentage remarkably ( 100%) as well as statistically identical with the result of underground water (D1) whereas the treatments of effluent from 2nd wash after Bath (D4) & mixed effluent from ETP were showed poor germination (73.33 %) . Second wash after scouring and bleaching treatment (D2) also showed good result. All results has been taken by considering other germination oriented parameters, such as germination energy, relative germination rate, effluent injury rate and germination velocity. On the contrary, outstanding result was showed at seedling growth stage from the treatment of D5 except others. But D4 treatment performed very poor among all parameters. So, it can be suggested that, D5 stage of textile effluent might be applied as irrigation water for the purpose of crop production as well as country bean cultivation and sustainable environment.

Abstract
This study was conducted in Chhindwara block of Chhindwara District of Madhya Pradesh. The study revealed that majority of the potato growers had (56.67%) low adoption behaviour of improved practices followed by (33.33%) medium adoption behaviour and only (10.00%) had high adoption behavior regarding overall improved potato production technology respectively. The study also revealed that the socio-economic factors had positive and significant influence on the adoption of improved potato production technology.

Technical assessment of catfish effluents management in Lagos State, Nigeria

Abstract
Catfish is one of the major source of dietary protein in Nigeria. Lagos State in particular is one of culturing area with abundant fresh water and marine environments. The aim of the study was to evaluate the catfish rearing industry and its effluents management and make appropriate recommendations. Forty fish farms were randomly selected in Lagos State. Questionnaire and in-depth interview were used for data collection on water sources, equipment operations, and waste management. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results indicated that over 80% of water for fish rearing was from shallow well and 95% of the waste water generated was not treated before disposal into environment (land, river, streams). Effluents disposals employed were open pit, 12.5%; drainage canal, 32.5%; bared-land, 10.0%; stream, 22.5% and re-used on farm, 12.5%. Only few farmers carried out simple treatment before disposal namely; infiltration, 2.5% and sedimentation, 2.5%. If the effluent management conditions were not improved, it could pose treat to environment in the studied areas. Pond effluent must be treated before disposed into environment and waste water from fish pond effluent should be reused as soil amendment (solid) as irrigation water and impoundment for newly established pond with little treatments.
