The influence of worksheets on agricultural students’ conceptual growth: An evaluation

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the agricultural model supported with worksheets developed by the researchers based on the 5-E model of constructivist learning theory, taught as an elective course in the second grade of the primary school, on students’ conceptual developments. For this purpose, a semi-experimental research method was used. While the experimental group consisting of 29 students was taught with the developed agricultural module, the control group consisting of 19 students was taught with the teacher’s own lesson materials. It was seen that although the pre-test results obtained from the Conceptual Perception Test were very similar to each other, at the end there was a remarkable difference (t (46)= 3.472: p< 0.05) in terms of the experimental group results. We see from the results that the students who took the agriculture course via the developed agricultural model become more successful and teaching materials within the developed model has an effect in developing students’ conceptual understanding of the agricultural concepts at the six level curriculum programmes.

Rumen and blood biochemical profile of goats fed on pelleted complete diet

Abstract

An experiment was conducted on twelve goats selected randomly to study the rumen and blood biochemical profile on pelleted complete diets. The goats were fed with pelleted complete diet up to 150 days of experiment T1 (12% CP, 55% TDN), T2 (14% CP, 60% TDN). Roughage to concentrate ratio was maintained at 60:40 with arhar straw as basal roughage. The concentrate mixture consisted of maize grain, cotton seed cake, groundnut cake, arhar chunni, mineral mixture and salt. The rumen and blood biochemical profile was studied at every month from each goat under study. The rumen liquor parameters varied significantly (p < 0.0.1) between the treatments except for pH. The blood biochemical parameters also varied significantly (p < 0.01) except for the serum calcium. It was inferred that the pelleted complete diet of varying energy and protein levels had a significant effect on various rumen and blood biochemical’s except pH and calcium, though there were significant differences between treatments, all the parameters were in normal range reflecting better health of animals.

Mitigating mango malformation: A study on physical modifications and chemical treatments

Abstract

Mango malformation is a serious disease causing severe economic losses every year. The aim of the present study was to assess the current disease position and devise an integrated strategy to control this malady in commercial orchards. The assessment of malformation was done at forty locations in eight mango growing districts of Pakistan. Malformation showed 100% prevalence in the surveyed orchards. Jhang was the most affected district with 60.13% severity while Khanewal was least affected with 13.80% severity. All the common mango cultivars were found more or less disposed to the disease. Effect of clipping of malformed branches at 15, 30 and 45 cm distance, respectively behind the panicles alone or combined with benomyl 50 WP spray at 2.0 gm L-1 water in the respective treatments was evaluated. The treatment with clipping at 45 cm distance followed by spray of benomyl showed the best results giving 70.37% decrease over previous years count. The results of the present studies will be helpful to minimize the losses inflicted by mango malformation disease globally.

Exploring gifted students’ environmental perspectives: A case study in Turkey

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the attitudes of primary students that study at gifted students’ school (BĐLSEM). A total of 156 primary school students participated in the research in Ankara BĐLSEM schools in 2010-2011 academic year. As data gathering tool “Environment Attitude Scale” developed by Atasoy (2005) was used in the study in the form of survey model. In data analysis phase, frequency, percentage, arithmetic mean, t test and one way variance analysis (ANOVA) were used. According to the results of the study, gifted students have positive attitudes towards environment. Another result indicated that gifted students’ attitudes towards environment showed significant differences according to “gender” and “class level” variants.

Fungal Lipolytic activity in Jatropha curcas L. fruit rot

Abstract

Isolation, identification and screening of lipid-degrading fungal organisms causing rot of unripe, ripe and dry fruits of Jatropha curcas L. were carried out, and determination of the fungus showing highest lipolytic activity on the substrate analysed from three different locations within Edo State, Nigeria was done using standard methods. Five fungal isolates (Curvularia geniculata, Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Trichoderma harzianum, Mucor sp. and Penicillium sp.) were recovered from the samples. Penicillium sp. had the highest frequency (37.5%) while Mucor sp. and Trichoderma sp. had the lowest (25%). Fungal isolates screened on solid agar showed low extracellular lipolytic activity detected by their non-production of a distinct clear zone of inhibition. In submerged fermentation, the growth of the lipolytic fungi ranged between 0.0492 (Mucor sp.) and 0.1539 g (T. harzianum). Spectrophotometric measurement (at 600 nm) of lipase production varied with Mucor sp. having the highest production of lipase. There was a significant difference (p≥0.05) between growth and lipolytic activities of the fungi. The study showed that Mucor sp. and L. theobromae are lipase producers and efficient lipid degraders. The implication of this is that these fungi could reduce the oil content of J. curcas seed and consequently its economic value.

Ozonation treatment of contaminated aqueous media with hazardous drug molecules

Abstract

This study presents results of ozonation of some different aromatic rings of medicines in aqueous solution. The aim of the research was to investigate the influence of ozone on ring cleavage of drug molecules with an aromatic structure. In this regard, phenobarbital, naphazoline, doxycycline, isoniazid and salbutamol were chosen for exposure to ozone gas overnight. It is proved that ozone can attack the OH groups, opening the aromatic ring to form unsaturated acids, aldehydes and linear alkyl/cycloalkyl groups which then appear as stable products. It is suggested that the first step in these reactions includes penetration of ozone at the C-H bond with the formation of a quinone and a subsequent attack of the aromatic ring T-bond system by the ozone with the formation of ozonides. With this process, ozonation can produce simple, biodegradable and less carcinogenic compounds from complex aromatic ones.
