The effects of different concentrations of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) on leafy stem cuttings of four tropical timber species

Abstract

The effects of different concentrations of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) on the rooting of leafy stem cuttings of Albizia zygia, Blighia welwitschii, Lophira alata and Pterocarpus soyauxii were investigated using non-mist propagators. Four hormone concentrations were used; 16000, 8000, 4000 and 0 µg ml-1 (control). Results indicated that Albizia, Blighia and Lophira cuttings rooted best when treated with 16000 µg ml-1 IBA (80, 100 and 40% respectively) and their control cuttings did not root. Pterocarpus stem cuttings treated with 8000 and 4000 µg ml-1 had 100% rooting while those treated with 16000 µg ml-1 and control was 80%. The highest root number was noted in cuttings of the various species treated with 16000 µg ml-IBA and there were significantly differences only from treatments of Blighia and Pterocarpus species. Stem cuttings treated with IBA at 16000 µg ml-1 also gave the fastest rooting time which ranged from 18 to 78 days. Stem cuttings of Blighia, Albizia and Lophira species treated with16000 µg ml-1 IBA also had the longest roots (2.48, 1.23 and 1.45 cm respectively). The longest root length of Pterocarpus was observed in cuttings treated with 8000 µg ml-1 of IBA (3.72 cm). Vegetative production of seedlings of these species is essential for reforestation programmes.

In vitro tuberization of glory lily (Gloriosa superba L.)

Abstract

Gloriosa superba L., a climber belonging to the family, Colchicaceae is a high value medicinal plant cultivated in Tamil Nadu. Colchicine is one major tropalone alkaloids of medicinal importance which cures gout, cancer, rheumatism. Vegetative propagation through V or L shaped tubers is a commonly followed practice but is considered slow with poor multiplication ratio of 1: 1 every year. The cost involved towards planting material (800 kg of tubers/acre) alone accounts to 2.0 lakhs at Rs. 250 per kg of tuber prevailing for the last three years. In this context, a suitable protocol for in vitro tuberisation using non-dormant tubers of Gloriosa superba L. on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with various concentrations growth regulators have been reported in the present study. Sprouted tuber node explants were sterilized with 70% ethanol for 30 s followed by 60 s in HgCl2 which reduced the contamination percentage (8.00%). MS medium supplemented with 4.0 mgL-1BAP and 1.0 mgL-1 NAA recorded the highest response for primary tuber (100%) and secondary tuber (100%) formation. This also recorded the maximum number of tuber (1.77) from single explants. GA3 (1.0 mgL-1) was observed to be vital for the elongation of shoot whereas, IAA (1.0 mgL-1) in combination with IBA (0.5 mgL-1) was effective for induction of roots on MS medium.

Effect of black plastic mulch on soil temperature and tomato yield in mid hills of Garhwal Himalayas

Abstract

The effect of soil mulching with black plastic sheets on soil temperature and tomato yield was evaluated in the temperate region of Uttarakhand. The experiment was carried out from May to September, of the year 2006, 2007 and 2008 in a 5 × 1.8 m size plot with ten replications. Highest soil temperature was obtained under the black plastic mulch during the early growth season due to less shade on the surface. The difference in temperature between mulched and bare soil was 2.2 to 3.4°C. Black plastic mulch significantly affects the tomato yield. The yield increased with black plastic mulch from 20.7 to 29.8% as compared to bare soil.

Assessment of surface water receiving sewage effluents for gardening irrigation purposes: A case study of Ona River in Ibadan Southwest Local Government area of Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

The analysis of chemical quality of Ona River in Ibadan Southwest Local Government (IBSWLG) area of Oyo State was undertaken in this study to assess its suitability for irrigation purposes by considering two major seasons in the ecological zone. In order to achieve the objectives, twenty sampling points were selected along the stream at about 20 m interval. The water samples collected were analyzed in the laboratory using methods of Ademoroti (1996). The result showed that despite the large content of sewage effluents characterized by some of the areas, the quality of the surface water remains within the safe limit for irrigation purposes; thus, Ona River water can be developed for all-year round crop production in the study area. However, the need to continuously monitor and assess surface water quality for irrigation is stressed.

Analysis of household energy sources and woodfuel utilisation technologies in Kiambu, Thika and Maragwa districts of Central Kenya

Abstract

This study was carried out in Kiambu, Thika and Maragwa districts of Central Kenya. Its objective was to analyze household energy sources and utilization technologies used. Primary data was collected from households using structured and non structured questionnaires. Trees on farm were found to be the major supply of the woodfuel energy where firewood was the main source of household energy followed by charcoal. Traditional three stones stoves were the most commonly used with 76 59 and 65 (household respondents) in Kiambu, Thika and Maragwa districts respectively. Improved charcoal stoves were the second commonly used while only a very negligible percentage used kerosene stoves and gas burners. Over 70% of the respondents were aware of the improved stoves but their adoption was less than 29%. The low adoption of improved stoves was due to their high cost as noted by the respondents. Over 90% of the households had the opinion that woodfuel sources were decreasing and there was a need to develop strategies for its future sustainability. The study recommended integration of woodfuel production to local farming systems and establishment of fuelwood plantations by Kenya Forest Service to substitute on farm sources. It also recommended promotion of improved stoves with higher efficiency to reduce the woodfuel used as well as improve on environmental pollution.

Community consultations on use and management of preferred NTFPs: A case study of the four ecological zones of Swaziland

Abstract

Traditional forest management systems were part of daily life in the natural forest and woodland resources in olden days Swaziland. The objective of the study was to embark on community consultations to collect information on their perception of preferred edible and medicinal non-timber forest products (NTFPs), their direct uses, the existing management strategies, the threats to forest biodiversity and the domestication and commercialization initiatives. Group discussions, individual perceptions and review of national forest policy were undertaken. The findings indicated that local communities lack knowledge of the existing policies and legislation that safeguard the sustainable use of NTFPs in the adjacent natural forests and woodlands, and further stated that there are no existing traditional local-level NTFP management systems. Uncontrolled trade in NTFPs, by non-resident collectors in Swaziland has been seen to be one of the predominant threats to forest biodiversity. This reaffirms the weak and ineffective national policies and legislation, and shows that the existing policies and legislation are not implementable. The positive side is that local communities have identified potential threats to forest biodiversity. All communities are willing to participate in the conservation and sustainable use of the adjacent natural forests and woodlands. Most local communities already have initiatives towards selection of top priority species for domestication and commercialization. The institutional, cultural, socio-economic, ecological/environmental and policy issues raised by local communities are crucial and essential elements for the formulation and development of guidelines for local-level sustainable management and development of NTFPs. Proper and innovative policies and legislation need to be put in place to cope with the current challenges.
