Demographic factors affecting the acquisition of ornamental plants marketing as a profession

Abstract 

There are several factors in acquiring a profession in the present day, that is, in the late 20th century and beginning of 21st century. The most important of these factors are demographic factors. Of those demographic factors, the characteristics such as gender, education level, income level and age are effective. Therefore, people prefer jobs suitable to their own socio-economic structures and gender when they begin to work. In this study, the demographic factors, the effects of gender, age, education level and income level on acquiring floriculture profession were investigated. The results obtained from the field study entitled the effect of demographic factors in the profession of ornamental plants marketing (floriculture) are quite impressive. In the survey conducted in the different points of the provinces Istanbul and Kocaeli, randomly selected 50 subjects were taken as sample and the data were analyzed by SPSS 16.0 program by using several statistical methods. 51 of the subjects were female and 99 were male. This situation shows that masculine station comes to the forefront in floriculture as it does in every profession. Mostly middle-aged or elder people do this profession. Additionally, education is also known as effective in acquiring a profession. However, there may be no need for education for some jobs. It was seen that 54 of the subjects were graduates of primary school, 60 of them were graduates of secondary school, 30 of high school and 6 of universities. This study indicated that people who are graduates of primary and secondary school were more in ornamental plants marketing (in floriculture) and education was not important for the profession of floriculture.

Advancing flower quality of tulip (Tulipa gesneriana Linn.) through application of plant growth regulators

Abstract

A study was carried out to investigate the effect of plant growth regulators on growth and flowering of tulip using two cultivars viz, Apeldoorn and Golden Oxford. The bulbs were given dip treatment in three different growth regulator solutions viz., indole acetic acid at 750, 500, and 250 ppm; 2-choloroethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride at 750, 500 and 250 ppm; 2,3,5 triiodobenzoic acid at 200, 150 and 100 ppm) along with control for two hours. Treated bulbs were then planted under open field conditions in three replications in randomized block design. The results revealed that treatment with indole acetic acid at a concentration of 500 ppm recorded minimum days to bulb sprouting, maximum plant height, number of leaves/plant, leaf area, leaf area index and scape length in both the cultivars as compared to control. The same treatment also recorded minimum days to floral bud appearance, colour break and flower opening, while 2-choloroethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride at a concentration of 500 ppm recorded maximum flower diameter, scape thickness, scape weight, flower duration and vase life in both cultivars as compared to control. It can thus be concluded that indole acetic acid was most effective for enhancing the early flowering and 2-choloroethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride improved most of the quality parameters of tulip. 2-choloroethy trimethyl ammonium chloride and 2,3,5 triiodobenzoic acid can be used for producing dwarf tulips suitable for bedding and pot plant production. Apeldoorn was observed to perform better than Golden Oxford for most of the characters.

The introduction of macro- and micronutrients on the yield and quality of Rosa hybrida cvs. Whisky and Cardinal Mac

Abstract 

The quality and flower yield of roses are directly dependent on the balanced application of macro and micronutrients. In the present study, foliar application of macro- and micronutrients was done after every 15 days when new emerging leaves had sprouted after pruning. The results reveal that plants treated with foliar application of micronutrients along with NPK showed significant increase in the growth characteristic like plant height, number of flowers plant-1, bud diameter, flower diameter, fresh and dry weight of flower, flower quality, flower stalk length compared to the application of NPK alone and untreated plants (control). Application of foliar fertilizer (NPK = 15:32:7 + micro power) and NPK (15:32:7) + chelated mix micronutrients gave the highest values compared to the other treatments in both cultivars. Cardinal responded well to micronutrients as compared to Whisky Mac in case of cultivars. Leaf total chlorophyll contents, vase life and the mineral contents (NPK) of leaves were significantly increased as a result of foliar application of micronutrients compared to the control treatment. It was concluded that application of micronutrients along with NPK could improve flower yield and quality of roses.

The progress and issues in the Dutch, Chinese and Kenyan floriculture industries

Abstract 

The review covered the progressive trends in the floriculture industry of The Netherlands, China and Kenya. The Netherlands maintained the largest market share of 70 - 75% in the industry. However, in 2008 its export declined to 3.9%. The Netherlands had moved from the traditional production role to distribution and marketing. Annual floriculture growth in Kenya was 15% and had become the highest foreign currency earner in 2009 for the country with an export earnings of US$464 million. Chinese total import and export of flowers in 2007 was US$200 million and the wholesale value of production was in 2009 US$1,172 million. China and Kenya remained net exporters of flower products and depended on outside markets for the sale of their flower products. Issues such as the environment and health, development of home market, high production and delivery costs and rising consumer demands, that had become significantly important for the sustained growth of the floriculture industry were reviewed. The prospects and the future trends of the flower industry of The Netherlands, China and Kenya were discussed.

Correlation co-efficients of component characters with seed yield and their direct effects in path analysis in fenugreek grown under six environments

Abstract

Thirty diverse genotypes of fenugreek were grown in six (E1 to E6) environments during the winter seasons for three consecutive years from 2002 to 2003 and 2004 to 2005 under high input and low input conditions, created by changing the date of sowing, spacing, fertilizer dose and other crop management practices at the Agriculture Farm of Institute of Agriculture, Visva-Bharati, West Bengal. Analysis of correlations revealed that significant and positive genotypic and phenotypic correlations of pod number, husk weight, stem weight and harvest index with seed yield did not change with the change in environmental conditions. Majority of the characters (except days to flowering and test weight) had significant and positive correlation with seed yield in all the environments except in E3, indicating the scope for selection for improving seed yield of fenugreek. The positive direct effects recorded in genotypic and phenotypic path analyses for pod number, seeds per pod and test weight were consistently greater in all the six environments. Therefore, selection of these characters in positive direction would be effective in increasing seed yield.

Performance of some promising genotypes of Glory lily (Gloriosa superba L.) against leaf blight disease

Abstract

The study was conducted on performance of eighteen genotypes of glory lily (Gloriosa superba L.) against leaf blight disease under Tamil Nadu conditions. Experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications at the Medicinal Plants Unit, Botanical Garden, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. All genotypes expressed significant variations for percent disease index and varied from 21.73 to 64.48%. The genotype GS 07 and genotype GS 05 exhibited the lowest index (21.73%) and highest index (64.48%), respectively. The percent disease index exhibited highly positive significant correlation both at phenotypic and genotypic levels for polyphenol oxidase. But it had negative significant association with peroxidase, total phenol content and catalase activity. The genotype GS 07 exhibited the lowest PDI value and this genotype considered as tolerant to leaf blight.
