Impact of Intra-Row Spacing on Onion Yield: A Study of Three Varieties at Adami Tulu Agricultural Research Center in Ethiopia

An experiment to asses the Effect of plant density (intra- row spacing) on yield and yield components (bulb diameter, bulb weight, marketable and unmarketable bulb yield and total bulb yield Q/ha) of onion (Allium cepa l.) varieties (Bomby red, Adama red and Nasic red) were conducted in 2007 and 2008 at Adami Tulu Agricultural Research center, on horticulture research field, in mid rift valley of Ethiopia with the objective of; to identify optimum spacing between two consecutive plants and to recommend the best spacing combination for those three morphologically different varieties independently. The experiment was conducted using randomized complete block design with three replicates. Area occupied by a single plot is 4 x 3 m and with a spacing of 1.5 x 1 m between block and plot respectively. There are a total of 12 treatments. The analyzed result using SAS soft ware shows significance difference among those varieties with different spacing level like (4, 6, 8, 10 cm) by using 10 cm as check or control. For Adama red, A4 gave best marketable yield (220.55 ± 84 q/ha) followed by A6 (201.45 ± 60 q/ha) and for Bomby red B4 out yielded much better than the rest spacing (301.58 ± 77 q/ha). For the third variety N4 gave (324 ± 65 q/ha) marketable yield followed by N6 (251.5 ± 126 q/ha).Generally evaluating the three varieties with different spacing, Nasic red (N4) performs better followed by bomby red (B4). Among the three varieties, Adama red (A8) gave less yield performance than the rest varieties.

Morphological Analysis of Ethiopian Mustard Varieties (Brassica carinata A. Braun) in Arusha, Tanzania: A Focus on Vegetative Traits

This study was conducted at Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center, Regional Center for Africa ((AVRDC - RCA), Madiira Experimental Research Station in Arusha, Tanzania in 2005. The objective of the study was to document vegetative agromophological traits in the Ethiopian mustard lines held at AVRDC – RCA in order to identify lines with useful traits that can be used as genitors for active breeding; and to rationalize the conservation of this species. Forty-seven lines of Ethiopian mustard were characterized for vegetative agromophological traits. Significant differences (P 0.05) were observed in most quantitative traits with eighty eight percent of the accessions flowering after 84 days from sowing. Among the qualitative traits, great variation was seen in leaf number/plant, leaf bloom and leaf blade blistering. There was a strongly negative significant correlation between days to 50% flowering and plant height with tall plants flowering early. There was a positive non-significant correlation between days to 50% flowering and leaf dimensions. There was a significant negative correlation between days to 50% flowering and leaves per plant with plants with many leaves flowering early. There was a positive non-significant correlation between leaf dimensions and leaves per plant. Results from diversity dendrogram showed two main clusters with three sub-clusters showing intra-species diversity. These preliminary results indicate that there is a wide variation in Ethiopian mustard collection held at AVRDC-RCA based on vegetative agromorphological traits. Further work should consider agromorphological characterization at reproductive phase or molecular characterization in order to get a clearer picture of this diversity.

Floral Ecology and Conservation Status of Dobera glabra Forssk. in Jazan, Saudi Arabia

Research on Dobera glabra Forssk is very little. A study was carried out in Jazan (south western Saudi Arabia) on the ecology of D. glabra. The species was distributed over a large area, but with decreasing density towards the Red Sea coast. Generally, the density of the species is very little. This is combined with 0% survival of seedlings and samplings after 8 months made the species existence endangered and urgent intervention is required to conserve it. Although the frequency of flowering was normal, nevertheless fruiting is extremely little (0.29%) . The species regenerates well with seeds without any pretreatment, however, the seedlings require immediate protection from grazing and other human activities. Seedling growth is extremely slow. All attempts of vegetative propagation of D. glabra from cuttings, failed despite the use of suitable rooting media and growth hormones. Due to the importance of the species as a fodder during the dry season where most other resources are unavailable and as famine food for humans, further research is needed on how to conserve D. glabra.

Utilization and Cultivation Potential of Wild Edible Fruits in Khasi Tribal Communities of Meghalaya

Plants provide most of the food products consumed by indigenous people in tropical countries. A study of wild edible fruits in the Khasi tribes of Meghalaya was carried out to assess their horticultural importance. One hundred fifty-one species belonging to 49 families were encountered, which include folk name, habit and the season of availability. Among them 100 were trees, 34 shrubs, 12 climbers and 5 herbs. Some edible plants have great economic value and are highly linked with socio-economic development of tribal communities of the state. The importance of documenting the use of wild edible species in this hotspot region is especially important because of rapid loss of biodiversity due to anthropogenic disturbance. The outcome of the present study may be helpful to have an understanding and thus make a conservation strategy of the wild edible species.

Reduced Impact Logging Awareness Among Forest Stakeholders: Insights from Nigeria and Cameroon

Damage associated with conventional logging practices is inconsistent with sustainable forest management. The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) model code of forest harvest, otherwise described as Reduced Impact Logging has therefore been advanced to reduce negative impacts on residual vegetation, soils and other environmental attributes. This study investigated the awareness rating of forest stakeholders on reduced impact logging (RIL) in Nigeria and Cameroon. Structured questionnaire and interview schedules were used to obtain information from 134 and 117 randomly selected stakeholders in Nigeria and Cameroon respectively. In Nigeria, results showed that environmentalists and non-govermental organizations have high level awarenes of RIL; the Federal and State governments, also forestry institutions have medium level awareness; while logging contractors, fellers, local forest users, traditional rulers, youth, and security agents have low awareness of RIL. In Cameroon, only the rural dwellers or resident forest users have low awareness of RIL. The timber harvest crew have medium level awareness while all other identified stakeholders showed high wareness. In the two countries, all the stakeholders showed positive leaning towards accepting RIL for its advantageous social impact technological content, mode of standard enforcement and environmental impacts.

Comparative Dietary Habits of Baboon Groups in Pine Plantations and Natural Habitats in Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands

Bark stripping of pine trees by chacma baboons in plantations of the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe has been on the rise leading to the assumption that bark constitutes baboon food. The study investigated diet variation among habituated bark stripping and non-stripping, plantation and non-plantation ranging baboon groups primarily to determine the noteworthy of pine bark in baboon diet. Food resources contributing >0.1% of the observations as well as pine bark were noted by group and season. Feeding observations were done through hourly instantaneous scan sampling which lasted for 5 min. During the scan, data on food items where possibly identified on species level, and part eaten were noted. To determine feeding variation, one way analysis of variance was applied with feeding percentage observations as the dependent variable and baboon groups, seasons, consumed species as well as plant parts as independent. The percentages of feeding observations were compared across baboon groups, seasons, consumed species and plant parts through the generalised linear model using SPSS version 15 (2006). Differences between means were tested using Bonferroni post hoc tests with a 5% level of significance. Feeding observation percentages did not vary significantly (P > 0.05, F = 1.02; df = 2, N = 960) across groups and seasons (P > 0.05, F = 1.957; df = 2), food species and plant parts were however, consumed at significantly (P < 0.05, F = 2896.85, df = 24) varying percentages. Bark consumption was lowest with 0.03 ± 0.16%. Pine bark is therefore not a preferred baboon food item. The establishment of plantations provided high quality food in the form of seed for the baboons.
