A study of the efficiency in the use of resources by small-scale fadama irrigation farmers in the northern zone of Sokoto State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the resource use efficiency in small-scale fadama irrigation using motorized-hand pump in the Northern Zone of Sokoto Agricultural Development Project (SADP). A field survey was conducted in which data were collected from 100 farmers randomly selected from five purposively selected Local Government Areas (LGAs). The data generated were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis and econometric estimation. The results show that resources were generally inefficiently utilized. Land, labour, seed and chemicals were over-utilized, while fertilizer, irrigation water, fuel and lubricants were generally under-utilized. For the farmers to improve the levels of the farm outputs at the present level of technology, adjustment in the use of the resources are required.

Challenges facing the agrochemical market in Isparta province

Abstract 

In recent days, healthy and reliable food has become one of the most important issues. Therefore, social-economic situation and status of agrochemical firms which are important information sources for farmers are examined. In this study, the data obtained from the owners of agrochemical markets in Isparta province were investigated by survey method. Data were evaluated to investigate the employer structure, obtaining selling inputs and credit usage of the firms. 56.2% of these firms were in company form and 6 of them were wholesaler. The agrochemical firms in Isparta region are small scaled newly established and individually owned firms. Most of them operate with their own capital. Agrochemical markets were positively affected by the latest regulations about opening the new agrochemical firms. It may be said that this tendency will be better in the future and agricultural agrochemical firms will employ agricultural engineers. Agrochemical firms are important organizations to inform farmers for new methods and development. Firms were found conscious on the agricultural chemical usage, but the cooperation between the firms and agricultural organization was found to be weak. Level of knowledge about EUROGAP among firm owners was also low. In order to improve the interaction level of firms with other institution and organization, seminar and panels should be organized. The consciousness level of agrochemical firms about production techniques like IPM and EUROGAP were not found to be high. Organizing training programs to increase awareness is important. Information level of farmers about diseases in the region has not developed as desired yet. In the same way, in order to increase the level of knowledge and awareness of farmers, the training programs should be increased to reduce unconscious chemical usage. As a result, one should not forget that any improvement in agricultural drug stores will have reflection on producers as well.

Effect of UNDP microfinance programme on poverty mitigation amongst farmers in Nigeria

Abstract 

This study assessed the impact of the UNDP Micro-finance Programme on the poverty status of farmers in the study area, examined the impact of UNDP’s micro-credit scheme on the beneficiaries, determined the profitability of agricultural enterprises engaged by the farmers, determine the relationship between inputs used and the effect on farmers output and identify the constraints associated with UNDP’s micro-credit scheme. The study was conducted in three (3) Local Government Areas, namely, Ikara, Makarfi and Kauru of Kaduna State. Purposive sampling technique was adopted in selecting the Local Government Areas and farming communities. Data was collected through the use of structured questionnaire and oral interview. A total of fifty four farmers (twenty-seven participating and twenty seven non-participating) were purposively selected from the study areas. The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics, independent t- test and Cobb-Douglas production function model. The result of the gross margin analysis shows that the average income of participating farmers rises from N48,609.30 to N189,187.00 after participating in the Programme. The study also established that income of the participating farmers in the study area was higher than that of non-participating farmers. The analysis shows that participating in the UNDP programme had a positive impact on the income and profit level of the farmers. This study recommended that the amount of credit facilities provided should be increase so as to increase productivity. The study also recommended that the repayment of credit facilities should be extended to more than a year.

Suitability and standard value of lands for cassava production for optimal use in Imo, Nigeria

Abstract 

Indiscriminate allocation of farm farmlands beyond efficient level affect farmers return, hence suitability and standard value of lands for cassava production for optimal use were investigated. Data were obtained using a multi-stage sampling technique, from a sample of 203 cassava farmers in the state and were analysed using descriptive statistics, land productivity ratio and econonometric tools. Most farmers are female of 55.7 6.8 years of age and post primary education status. Nutrient ammendment is at the rate of 442.36 ± 102.73 Kg/Ha and at mean cost of N36401.77 ± 28575.84/Ha. The performance rate of 0.96 tons/person/Ha was obtained. The suitability index ranges from 0.139 to 0.908 with 46.3% cultivating on non-suitable land of 0.0-0.339 while only 20.7% cultivated on suitable lands of above 0.723 suitability index with a smaller mean area of 1.48Ha. The performance rate across these classes of land ranges from 0.44 tons/Ha/person to 2.11 tons/Ha/person for non-suitable land and suitable lands respectively. Suitable lands had the highest land productivity of 5.71 while moderate and non suitable lands had only 4.00 and 3.72 respectively, hence about 53.4% and only 7.5% increase in production is achieved as a piece of land is improved from non-suitable and moderately suiatble lands respectively to suitable land in the area. The MVP ranges from N302429.76/Ha for non-suitable lands to N718535.2/Ha for suitable lands. The study noted that suitable lands have higher opportunity cost than others for cassava production, hence recommentds that opportunity cost of land must be based on higher MVP for optimal use.

Economic assessment of fertilizer use and integrated practices for environmental sustainability and agricultural productivity in Sudan savannah zone

Abstract

An assessment of fertilizer use and other integrated practices was carried out with two hundred farmers selected by stratified random sampling from twenty villages in Kano and Katsina States of Nigeria. The farming system was mixed farming (legume-cereal-livestock mixture), as a strategy both to address nutrient management as well as their livelihoods (both food and income security). The major crops comprised maize, sorghum, millet, rice, soybean, groundnut and cowpea. The average farm size was 7.4 ha and livestock comprised an average of 14 goats, 15 poultry birds, 7 sheep and 9 cattle. An average of 63 kg fertilizer was applied per ha of land relative to about 649 kg of fertilizer requirement per hectare of the crops grown, very low relative to Asia and some other African countries such as South Africa, Malawi, Benin and Ethiopia. The livestock mix provided substantial farmyard manure for fertilizing the soils and supplemented farm drought animals / animal traction while the crop residues (legumes and cereals) provided feeds for the livestock. It was found that fertilizer use multiplies the returns on farmers’ output by a factor of 2.1-14.6, which was relatively higher than previous findings (IFDC, 2002) for the same crops in Nigeria, but crop yields were comparatively less for other Sub-Saharan and Asian countries. The observed higher response coefficient could be explained by the use of organic/farmyard manures and other soil conservation practices. Farmers exploit land and the natural fertility of the soil through continuous cropping and poor fertilization (organic and inorganic). Critical environmental issues emanating from these are soil nutrient depletion, soil degradation by erosion, weed and pest invasion, all culminating in sustained low productivity. It was therefore concluded that sustained growth in agricultural productivity without environmental exploitation and degradation cannot be achieved unless efforts to enhance farmers’ fertilizer use and organic fertilization are taken seriously. Efforts should be put in place to correct fertilizer market inadequacies, particularly to monitor the quality standard and guarantee farmers’ access to fertilizers, as well as encourage National research and extension programs to emphasize economic use of basic local materials for effective fertilization of farmers’ fields, reduced vulnerability to nutrient loss and drought, and increased agricultural productivity.

Adoption of innovations and best management practices by goat farmers in eastern Mediterranean Region of Turkey

Abstract

Goat farming has traditionally been a major livelihood for many rural families in the mountainous and uphill areas of the Eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. In recent years, the increased demand for goat products raised the issue of developing a sustainable goat sector in the region. The primary purpose of this study was to determine best management practices and innovations in goat farming and their adoption levels in the Eastern Mediterranean Region of Turkey. For this purpose, 140 goat farmers were surveyed and their socioeconomic characteristics, management practices, problems encountered, levels of applying innovations and best management practices, as well as factors influencing their adoption were investigated. Results of the study revealed that goat farmers face problems with expensive feeds, low governmental subsidies, and cheap prices for goat products. Adoption level of innovations and best management practices were found quite low and it was influenced by farmers’ experience, income, travels, and contacts with extension service and private veterinarians.
