Tinea capitis in primary school children in Hamedan (West of Iran)

Abstract
Regarding the importance of tinea capitis as a world wide health problem, evaluation of this problem needs territorial epidemiologic studies. This disease is commonest in boys less than 15 years old, therefore this study was performed to determine the prevalence and aetiologic agents of tinea capitis among school children in Hamedan. We examined1800 cases of children from Hamedan primary schools. The cases were divided in three areas of according with economical, social and cultural level in: poor, medium and rich. In 44 cases suspected to have tinea capitis with were realized collection from lesion for mycological diagnosis. The causative agents were identfied macroscopically and microscopically after the clinical samples were subjected to potassium hydroxide examination and culture isolation. In 20 of these cases, the mycological exams demonstrate direct exam positive and 9 cases of them were culture positive. As a result, The incidence rate of tinea capitis among these cases were 1.11%, the highest rate (1.82%) in the poor area, the lowest rate (0.17%) in the rich area. The highest incidence rate of mycologically positive cases were in 7 year old children (25%). In the direct exam positive cases, 55% had Endothrix type and in the cultures, 44.45% was Trichophyton verrucosum, the most frequent isolate. Tinea capitis had the highest incidence rate in the poor areas. The incidence of tinea capitis in crowded families >5 is more than uncrowded families <5. The commonest type of lesion was gray patch (55%). Tinea capitis is still a public health problem in the world and any scalp lesion with itching and scaling should be considered as tinea capitis unless the opposite be proved through direct microscopy or culture tests.

Dermatoses reports in Wenchuan districts of Sichuan province after 5.12 earthquake

Abstract
After 5.12 earthquakes, we attended one team for medical support at the dermatologic clinic in Wench-uan district of Sichuan province, the centre of the earthquake. The dermatoses were recorded and statistically analyzed. We try to assess different epidemiological and clinical features of the dermatoses in Wenchuan district of Sichuan province after 5.12 earthquakes. Clinical assessment of 947 patients with skin diseases who presented to a dermatology clinic in the people’s Hospital of Wenchuan county, Sichuan province of China was done during one month period (July 21, 2008 - August 22, 2008). Of the cases, 73.9% were Qiang people. Papular urticaria was recorded in 23.7% of the cases. One case with condylomata and one case with gonorrhea uretheritis were found. No outbreak of the viral dermatoses such as German measles, or measles occurred. China is a multi-ethical country. The cases in our re-sults are according with the local residents population characters. We had not found the outbreaks of viral dermatoses, but the skin lesions associated with insects were very common and its incidences were higher than before at the same place and in the same period of one year. The skin diseases induced by insects were papular urticarias, mite dermatitis, phaedrus dermatitis, etc. Our observation results imply that insecticidal work should be highlighted after earthquakes.

Studies on the physico-chemical parameters of Omi water body of Ago-Iwoye, Nigeria

Abstract
In Omi water body, the physico-chemical parameters such as dissolved oxygen ranged from 1.4 to 4.8 mg/L; pH, 6.7 to 7.2; temperature, 26.5 to 31.5°C; alkalinity, 24.2 to 25.4 ppm; conductivity, 23.0 to 28.3 Ohms/cm; turbidity 0.11 to 0.15 m; and free carbon dioxide from 3.5 to 4.5 mg/L. Dissolved oxygen, pH and water temperature serve as variables since the fluctuation of one affects the values of others. The investigation shows that Omi water is safe for drinking when purified.

Plasma progesterone profile and ovarian activity of forced-moult layers

Abstract
Different techniques of moult induction were used to force moult 360 commercial old layers, aged 85 weeks. The techniques were: natural day length with feed and water ad libitum, natural day length with water but no feed, natural day length with no feed and no water, reduced day length with feed and water ad libitum, reduced day length with water but no feed, reduced day length with no feed and no water, designated as T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6, respectively. The T1 served as the control. Sixty hens were randomly assigned to each treatment which was replicated 3 times. The moult induction period was for 10 days coupled with 50 days of recovery period when the birds were fed low protein moult diet. At day 7, the ovaries of T2, T3, T5, T6 regressed weighing 3.43, 7.03, 5.00, 4.80 g, respectively. These were significantly (P<0.05) lower than the ovarian weights of 34.73 and 35.13 g of T4 and control (T1), respectively. By day 35 of moult induction, the ovaries of T2, T3, T5 showed the greatest recovery increasing to 18.53, 20.73, 13.27 g, respectively, while T4 decreased to 13.00 g. The number of large yellow follicles of T2, T3, T5, T6 decreased from 3.33 on day 0 to 0.00 on day 7. By day 21 the large yellow follicles of T2, T3, T5 and T6 started regenerating, ranging between 2.33 and 3.00 and by day 49 were significantly (P<0.05) higher than T4 (1.67). Plasma progesterone levels decreased from between 0.50 and 0.60 ng/ml on day 0 to undetectable levels by days 7 and 14 in T2, T3, T5, T6. By day 21, plasma progesterone levels (ng/ml) started rising in T2 (0.40), T3 (0.33), T5 (0.40), T6 (0.33) although these were significantly (P<0.05) lower than those of T1 (0.77) and T4 (0.81). As the number of large yellow follicles increased, the concentration of progesterone in the plasma increased.

Extension of shelf life of garri by hygienic handling and sodium benzoate treatment

Abstract
The effect of hygienic handling and sodium benzoate treatment on the microbial, quality and shelf stability of garri was evaluated for 14 month using standard methods. Results indicated that there were less bacteria and fungi in the hygienically handled garri at the end of the storage period than for conventionally handled samples. No growth was detected in the hygienically handled and sodium benzoate (SB) treated samples. Six bacteria and nine fungi genera were isolated from the conventionally processed and hygienically handled garri, respectively. Only Bacillus was isolated from the SB treated samples. The degree of deterioration recorded in the protein, lipid, ash and available carbohydrate for the conventionally handled samples were significantly more than the hygienically handled and SB treated samples. Overall sensory evaluation shows that combination of hygienic handling and SB treatment has maximum positive impact on the microbial quality, shelf stability and acceptability of garri during storage.

Antimicrobial activity of leaf extracts of Ocimum gratissimum on selected diarrhoea causing bacteria in southwestern Nigeria

Abstract
The antibacterial activity of different extracts from the leaves of Ocimum gratissimum was tested against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi and Salmonella typhimurium, pathogenic bacteria that cause diarrhea. These extracts evaluated include cold water extract (CWE), hot water extract (HWE) and steam distillation extract (SDE). Only SDE has inhibitory effects on the selected bacteria and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranged from 0.1% for S. aureus to 0.01% for E. coli and S. typhimurium, and 0.001% for S. typhi.
