Milk Production Losses Due to Helminth Infections in Sudanese Semi-Intensive Dairy Farms

The objectives of this study were to investigate whether or not consumption of protected glutamine during transition period would affect biomarkers of oxidative stress and milk production. 36 pregnant Holstein dairy cattle were chosen according to body condition score (BCS) and their parity, after which they were classified into two groups with regards to their expecting calving and parity. Group B received daily (100 g/day) protected glutamine with formaldehyde for 21 days before calving, while Group A received basic ration only. After calving, Group B was divided into two categories; one category continued to receive glutamine (100 g/day) for 21 days (BFAF, n = 9), while the other did not (BFAN, n = 9). Also, group A was classified into two categories; one received glutamine (100 g/day) (BNAF, n = 9), while the other did not (BNAN, n = 9). There were no any significant differences and interaction among treatments in dry matter intake of 0, +7 and +14 after calving, but dry matter intake of d +21 was affected by post partum glutamine feeding and it increased in (BFAF) and (BNAF) as compared to (BFAN) (19.31 and 19.26 versus 18.68 respectively) (p≤0.05). Milk yield and its components did not differ in the treatments. The total antioxidant status (TAS mmol/L) influenced by postpartum glutamine feeding on +7, +14 and +21 after calving was most for (BFAF) and (BNAF) as compared to BFAN and BNAN (p≤0.05). The plasma glutathione peroxidase activity (PGX units/ml PCV) was affected by pre and postpartum treatments and glutamine supplementation had increment effects on (PGX) at 0, +7 and +21 days after parturition. The results suggested that glutamine feeding could enhance total antioxidant status and plasma glutathione peroxidase activity in fresh Holstein dairy cows and the best level of formaldehyde for protection glutamine is 1%.

Impact of Internal Parasitism on Milk Yield in Sudan's Semi-Intensive Dairy Systems

A cross sectional study was conducted in the dairy cattle of Al-Rodwan dairy project in Omdurman town during the three different seasons of the year. The results of the faecal examinations (n-290) showed that the prevalence of the internal parasites was 16, 8.42, and 7.36% for dry cool, dry hot, and wet hot season, respectively. The prevalence of coccidiosis was found to be 13, 4.21, and 2.10% for dry cool, dry hot, and wet hot season, respectively, while the prevalence of Fasciolosis was 1, 4.21, and 4.21% for dry cool, dry hot, and wet hot season, respectively. Statistically, no association between season and the prevalence of internal parasites (P> 0.05). A positive association (P< 0.01) between the milk yield and the occurrence of internal parasites was observed (infection with internal parasite reduce milk yield of the animal). Similarly, an association was recorded for the breed and age of the animal with infection of internal parasites (P< 0.05). Application of odds ratio (OR) indicated that breed was considered to be a protective factor (OR = 0.294), while age of the animal was considered to be a risk factor (OR = 3.638) for presence of internal parasites.

Anti-inflammatory Properties of Hibiscus asper Leaf Extracts in Rat Models of Oedema and Arthritis

The present study was undertaken to assess the anti-inflammatory potential of the aqueous and methanolic extracts of Hibiscus asper Hook. f. leaves (Malvaceae) against carrageenan induced acute inflammation and complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA)-induced arthritis in Wistar albino rats. In the carrageenan-induced acute inflammation, the methanolic extract of H. asper exhibited significant anti-inflammatory effect at the dose 200 and 400 mg/kg. Maximum inhibition (57.29%) was noted at the dose of 200 mg/kg after 2 h of drug treatment while with the aqueous extract, the maximum effect (46.36%) was obtained after 2 h at the same dose. Further, methanolic extract of H. asper leaves showed a significant dose-dependent protective effect against CFA-induced arthritis. At the dose of 400 mg/kg, the percentage of inflammation was 29.33 versus 45.56% for the control group on day 20 and 17.43 versus 60.80%, respectively to the treated (400 mg/kg) and control group at the end of the treatment period. These observations suggest possible therapeutic potential of the methanolic extract of H. asper leaves in inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid arthritis.

Ovarian Granulosa Cell Tumor in a Dog: A Case report from Tehran, Iran

Ovarian granulosa cell tumors (GCTs) are common neoplasm in domestic animal that originates from the sex-cord stromal cells of the ovary. The aim of present paper was to report a case of ovarian granulosa cell tumor in a 6-year-old female German shepherd and to describe the histopathological pattern of this tumor. The dog with history of clinical signs such as ascites, bloody discharge from the vulva and vulvar swelling was referred to the veterinary hospital of Tehran university. Ovariohysterectomy was done and the surgically removed ovarian masses were prepared for histopathological studies. Macroscopic and microscopic studies in this case are discussed and histopathological examination confirmed ovarian granulosa cell tumor.

Impact of Biological Feed Additives on Broiler Chicken Growth Performance

The present study aimed at evaluating the effect of the probiotic Primalac, prebiotic Biolex-MB, a combination of the two supplements (probiotic plus prebiotic) and one growth promoter antibiotic (Flavomycin) on performance results of broiler chickens. Three hundred day old Ross 308 broilers were equally distributed into 30 floor pens and reared for 42 day. A basal diet was also supplemented with Flavomycin (650 g/ton-1), Primalac (900 g/ton-1), Biolex-MB (2000 g/ton-1) and mixture of Primalac plus Biolex-MB (synbiotic) for starter (1 to 21 days) and grower (22 to 42 days) periods, resulting 5 dietary treatments were prepared including control group. Each dietary treatment was fed ad-libitum to six replicate group of 10 birds at the beginning of rearing period. Birds and feed were weighed weekly. The daily body weight gain and feed efficiency were significantly (P<0.05) more improved by the synbiotic treatments compared with the control broilers. The birds under antibiotic treatment had higher breast and thigh percent as compared to control birds (p<0.05). Also, supplementation of broiler's diet with prebiotic significantly (p<0.05) increased gizzard percent. The results of present study showed that probiotic and prebiotic can be used as non-antibiotic growth promoter feed additives to improve broiler chickens growth indices.

Histological Analysis of Sildenafil Citrate's Impact on the Medial Geniculate Body in Adult Wistar Rats

The histological effect of oral administration of sildenafil citrate (Viagra), commonly used as an aphrodisiac and for the treatment of erectile dysfunction on the medial geniculate body of adult Wistar rat was carefully studied. The rats of both sexes (n=24), average weight of 202 g were randomly assigned into three treatment (n=18) and control (n=6) groups. The rats in the treatment groups ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ received respectively, 0.25, 0.70 and 1.43 mg/kg body weight of sildenafil citrate base dissolved in distilled water daily for 30 days, through orogastric feeding tube, while that of the control group D, received equal volume of distilled water daily during the period of the experiment. The rats were fed with growers’ mash obtained from Edo Feeds and Flour Mill Ltd, Ewu, Edo State, Nigeria and were given water liberally. The rats were sacrificed on day thirty-one of the experiment. The medial geniculate body was carefully dissected out and quickly fixed in 10% formal saline for histological studies. The histological findings after H&E method indicated that the treated section of the medial geniculate body showed some decreased cellular population, degenerative changes, cellular hypertrophy, with some vacuolations appearing in the stroma, with the group that received higher doses of sildenafil citrate (1.43 mg/kg) more severe. These findings indicate that sildenafil citrate consumption may have some deleterious effects on the medial geniculate body of adult Wistar rats at higher doses and by extension may affect the functions of the medial geniculate body and this may probably have some adverse effects on auditory sensibilities by its deleterious effects on the cells of the medial geniculate body of adult Wistar rats. It is therefore recommended that further studies aimed at corroborating these observations be carried out.
