Aims and scope
African Journal of Nursing and Midwifery is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that provides a forum for the publication of significant research articles in all aspects of nursing and midwifery, especially new trends and advances. The journal calls for systematic and scholarly articles, critical reviews, short communications, perspective and case report that will rouse debate on research, policy, theory or philosophy of nursing and midwifery.
High profiles manuscripts dealing with nursing practice, women's health, nursing education, patient care, nursing informatics and management, are encouraged. Priority is given to critical scholarly debate on issues that have strategic significance for educators, practitioners, leaders and policy-makers.
African Journal of Nursing and Midwifery intends to improve the understanding of nursing and midwifery practice in Africa and the world, both as a profession and as an academic discipline. In this sense, our mission is to publish excellent scholarly articles encompassing all aspects of nursing and midwifery, and we invite researchers and scientists in the field to contribute the outcome of their scholarship to the journal. The aims of the journal include the following:
- To publish the highest quality scholarly contributions reflecting the diversity of nursing and midwifery. In this sense, we will publish work that demonstrates the use of rigorous methodology as well as highlight the theoretical underpinnings of nursing and midwifery.
- To publish articles dealing with planning, production, management, and governance of the health workforce, and their links with health care delivery and health outcomes, particularly as related to nursing and midwifery.
- To publish articles concern with psychiatric and mental health nursing. Because clinical research is the primary vehicle for the development of nursing science, the journal presents data-based articles on nursing care provision to clients of all ages in a variety of community and institutional settings. Additionally, the journal publishes theoretical papers and manuscripts addressing mental health promotion, public policy concerns, and educational preparation of mental health nurses.
- To publish original articles on current research, issues, practices and innovations in addictions nursing, as well as the delivery of care in nursing and midwifery.
- To publish new research and current knowledge across a broad range of clinical and interdisciplinary topics including maternity care, gynecology, primary care for women and newborns, public health, health care policy, and global health. With a focus on evidence-based practice, the journal is dedicated to improving the health care of women throughout their lifespan and promoting excellence in midwifery.
- To encourage debate, both theoretical and practical, on a wide range of topics that represent a variety of cross-disciplinary interests. The journal is interested in attracting submissions that exhibit innovative, qualitative and quantitative research methods and approaches particularly research that supports high-level learning and teaching, which is fresh, exciting, analytical, critical, controversial, stimulating and creative.
- To encourage authors to write clearly, logically and systematically so that their content is accessible to a wide readership, particularly those individuals who may not be familiar with the subject matter under discussion.
- To publish mixed-method manuscripts on a broad spectrum of topics that include, but are not limited to clinical, psychosocial, biological, educational, health services, and health systems research studies. The journal also welcomes short research reports, systematic reviews, clinical and/or conceptual papers, current issues, editorials, and commentaries that are of special interest to nursing and midwifery.
- To publish practical and theoretical guidance for trainees and professionals including papers and comments, editorials, book and policy reviews. The journal also provides continuing medical education content.
- To publish articles on clinical and health policy developments, covering topics including cardiac care, dermatology, diabetes, and respiratory care.
- To publish Articles focus on professional development and clinical, nursing management, pediatric nursing, administrative, academic, and research areas of orthopaedics.
- To publish articles that will bring about a high quality of nursing and midwifery education, maintain high standard of professional nursing and midwifery practice and enforce discipline within the profession.
- Finally, to publish leading research and scholarship that are of special interest to nursing clinicians, educators, leaders, policy makers, and researchers, as well as other health care providers.
