African Journal of Gender and Women Studies [AJGWS] is a peer-reviewed, hybrid open access journal committed to advancing critical scholarship, feminist theory, and evidence-based discourse on gender and women's experiences in Africa and the wider Global South.
AJGWS offers an inclusive international platform for the prompt dissemination of rigorous, socially relevant research that interrogates gender relations, power structures, and social transformation. The journal connects theoretical innovation with lived realities by publishing works that address contemporary issues in gender equality, women's empowerment, social justice, policy reform, and sustainable development.
We invite original contributions from gender scholars, sociologists, feminist researchers, development practitioners, legal experts, public health specialists, educators, and policy analysts across the world. Our editorial commitment is to uphold intellectual rigor, protect publication ethics, and sustain a fair, transparent, and efficient peer review and editorial process that promotes inclusive knowledge production and gender-responsive development.

Aims & Scope
AJGWS publishes original research articles, systematic reviews, conceptual papers, empirical investigations, short communications, and critical case studies that make substantial contributions to gender and women studies, including but not limited to:
Gender Theory and Feminist Epistemologies, Women's Rights and Social Justice, Gender and Development, Gender-Based Violence and Conflict Resolution, Women, Leadership and Political Participation, Gender, Education and Economic Empowerment, Reproductive Health, Sexuality and Well-being, Gender, Law and Policy Analysis, Women, Culture, Media and Representation, and Intersectionality, Masculinities and Social Transformation.
Our objective is to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and encourage contextual, African-centered perspectives that inform policy, challenge inequalities, and advance gender-equitable societies.
Publication Model: Hybrid Open Access [Primarily Open Access]
Authors publishing in AJGWS may select one of two publishing routes upon submission, however the journal now primarily accepts and publishes open access articles to maximize global visibility, accessibility, and research impact.
1. Open Access: The article is made immediately and permanently accessible online to all readers upon publication under the Creative Commons Attribution License [CC BY 4.0]. The publication charge for this journal is 500 USD. Authors who are not able to pay this amount may apply for a partial discount. Please note that we do not offer free publications.
2. Subscription Access: The article is published at no charge to the author and is accessible to subscribers and licensed institutions through our website. Authors are permitted to share their work in line with our self-archiving policy. This route is available on a limited basis.
APC Discount Policy
We are dedicated to promoting equitable and inclusive academic publishing. Authors with limited research funding may apply for a partial reduction of the Article Processing Charge based on World Bank country income classification, institutional funding capacity, or demonstrable financial constraint. Please note: We do not provide full waivers. A minimum administrative charge applies to all open access articles to sustain editorial and production operations.
Editorial Standards
All manuscripts submitted to AJGWS undergo a rigorous double-blind peer review process conducted by at least two independent experts in the relevant field. All submissions are screened for originality through Crossref Similarity Check powered by iThenticate. The journal adheres strictly to the COPE Core Practices and is guided by the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing as issued by COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME to ensure research integrity, editorial independence, and ethical publishing at all stages.
